Mar2010-Charming Marrakech…images up

I am currently shooting in Morocco. Yesterday and today in Marrakech, where it’s been sunny, cloudy and raining. The images only really stand apart when the sun is out. Taking pictures here is a nightmare, people screaming at you when they think you are pointing a camera in their direction. People running for cover at the sight of a camera. I had no idea how bad it was here. I was taking a view over the main square last night when a guy put his hat over my lens and said no photo’s unless I paid him. It’s constant harassment and if you don’t give them anything they get aggressive. I stood my ground and they do back down, but I can see that people would get very intimidated by the behaviour here, but really I think it’s all this colour that brings people here. Just trying to take pictures for work here is almost an clandestine affair.

Well, once out of Marrakech that was the end of my internet access. The odd wifi spot appeared only to disappear a minute later. The picture taking situation improved as I had more scenics to shoot, but still the people in this country are really not up for having their picture taken. My last day in Morocco was in Essaouira on the coast. Here it was all more relaxed and I finally felt I was not having a battle to take pictures.

The days of trekking through the mountains produced fabulous scenics, thanks to my mule Scoobydoo who carried the two camera pack that myself and assistant haul everywhere. It certainly made 8 hours over the mountains comfortable. The slightly unsettled weather produced the light that adds drama to mountain scenes and we were lucky to be mainly in sunshine but clouds casting shadows over the huge vistas.
