90′s skydive

I found these this morning while clearing out old photo files. They were shot the week I learned to skydive back in the early 90′s. I will now try and find some more recent pictures and video!

This one was some years later when I went to Skydive Chicago to see if my mate Pete Stone managed to make a 300 and some formation.

Using a German Fonic micro sim card in my UK iPad,

The last few days I spent at a trade show in Munich and as this was the first attempt at using the iPad on its own I decided to try and use a micro sim card from the country I was visiting to make the whole data abroad thing a lot cheaper.
After some initial research I decided on a Fonic micro sim card, this I was told would cost me €9 and then bundles of data. It in fact it cost me €7 for the sim, which just pops out a micro sim if that’s what you need, which let me surf for a brief hour. I had then to go and buy a top up voucher for €20 which then lasted more than a busy day at the trade show. I would have bought the top up at the same time as the sim if I had realised.

I bought this card from a drug store called DM, but I understand you can also buy them from Rosssmann, Müller and Saturn drug stores.

The way all this is set up is easy if you can follow the German instructions. I needed a German speaker that could spare me ten minutes, I also needed an wifi connection to allow me to register the card on the Fonic website and a German address. I used my hotel address. The registration took about ten minutes of all the normal questions and inputting of codes that came on the card. Once this was done a reboot of the iPad and we were surfing.

When I needed to top it up with credit, I needed to return to the DM drug store where you choose a €20 or €30 card voucher, they produce you a till receipt that has your top up code on it.

Under Settings on the iPad I dropped down to cellular data and then on the right sim applications, here the first option tells you how much credit you have left and the third option is the one you use to input your top up code. The second option is to do it from your bank account if you have added these details in your initial setup, and the fourth option is a readme file.

All topped up and surfing continued.

I’m sure I will find out more about using these cards as time goes by, but initially it was worth the effort for the cheap data.

4º Sea swimmers

Early January just off of Brighton beach we gathered a small die hard group of swimmers. The water was at 4 degrees and it was just getting light. I was looking for that window just before the sun came up where I could use the new water housing with the canon 5dmk2 with the pocket wizard tt1 on top and the canon speedlite in another housing with the pocket wizard tt5 and a quantum battery. A third swimmer swam with my flash gear just off to my left while I swam and shot with the new Del Mar housing.

Pete Webb is an adventure sports photographer, that specialises in water, mountain and bike sports. He started his career with watersports, mainly surfing then when surf brands started getting involved with snowboarding he was there too. A true sports photographer that likes to get to where the sport is by joining the athletes.

We have just shot Dan Keating, one of our Olympic gymnasts. This is the second athlete in a series running up to the Olympics that we are shooting for Flipside magazine.

I will keep updating this post with the images we shoot for this series.

Here is the almost finished custom housing I’m having made in California. Erik from Del Mar Housings sent me this last night to show me that it’s almost complete. He is adding me a side port so we can shoot tethered in a pool or sync flash from a sync cable as well as the wireless pocket wizard option. All very exciting and looking forward to it’s delivery in the next couple of weeks.

We have just been shooting a collection of tripods, binoculars, and spotting scopes for Vanguard. Helped by Cécile in Arc1950, the Les Arcs region of the alps. As ever Cécile pulled off the ultimate in organisation and got us up mountains with the help of the mountain maintenance crew. They were all very helpful. We are looking forward to returning in the ski season as this is a fabulous ski in ski out resort.

I’ve been mainly using the Alta Pro tripod myself with the pistol grip head and absolutely love it. It was interesting to see the improvement for next season. We carried tripods, heads and binoculars up mountains but Pete Edwards who was assisting never grumbled. Saying that the size of our packed lunch was enough to power you up to 2500m. The ridge shot above was shot with a remote pocket wizard trigger as the idea was to shoot a getting there picture and I felt it would not work with a single person. So with no one left to shoot it we loaded up and headed off with a camera on a tripod and shot ourselves walking the ridge. I think it worked as I imagined. With the help from the resort and Christophe in Luxembourg this was a great job an enjoyed our time up a mountain again.
